Think about your favourite pair of jeans…why do you think they make you look so good? There’s only one reason and it’s fit!
A good fit makes us wear things until they discolour or tear, hell even after it reaches it’s sell by date we refuse to get rid of it. It just fits so well right?! What if I told you that everything in your wardrobe could make you look great?! It’s possible! All you need is a simple fit guide to tell you what to look for when you shop and I’ve put one together for you *wink*.
One important thing I want to point out though is – there is a big difference between size and fit. Size asks the question – Is there enough fabric to cover my body? Fit asks the question – Does it flatter my shape? Once you find the right size, we look at fit.
We often get size and fit confused and fall into the trap of buying clothes that doesn’t make us look great. All it really takes is a few more minutes to try a garment on and check the fit. If it fits well, great! If it doesn’t find yourself a great tailor.
Remember, fit always trumps size. Nowadays we can’t really take sizes seriously because it changes from brand to brand. Size and fit vary so much these days that your tailor really should be on speed dial!
Finally, regardless of fit, always choose a style and length of garments that compliment your body shape.
The simple fit guide below is an easy way to help you stick to buying items that make you look great. I put some diagrams together for blouses, jackets, skirts and trousers that you can easily use as a reference when shopping.
You could also use the guide for clothes you already own. Get them tailored or get rid of them for a more organised wardrobe.
Let’s get started!
TOPS
Blouses
Blazers/Jackets
BOTTOMS
Skirts
Trousers
Once your garment meets all the fit criteria (with or without a tailor), remember to test the fit both standing and sitting. Can you move freely? Can you bend your arms easily? Can you bend and pick up something off the floor?
Now that you know what to look out for when it comes to fit, did you know that the right blouse can make you look taller and the right skirt and trousers can make you look slimmer?!
Until next time, stay stylish!
