Coco Chanel had it right – “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life”. I personally remember a couple of my out of the ordinary haircuts. All coinciding with significant life changes, I’m sure you can relate!
Changing our hair makes us feel brand new and makes us feel like great things are about to happen.
I’m also very fond of changing my hair in Spring! Feeling the warm sun on my skin after my Winter hibernation really puts me in the mood for a new do. You may be thinking about a new look too so I thought some tips would be a good topic this week.
I summarised guidelines from Glamour and About Style to help you pick the best hair cut for your face shape. I also put some photo’s together for inspiration.
LET’S FIND YOUR FACE SHAPE
HEART
You have a broader brow and a narrow chin.
Most flattering haircuts
- Side swept bangs (shortest length stops at the arch of your brow, longest at the outer corner of the eye)
- Long graduated bob, chin length
- Long layers
- Shoulder length styles also work
- Feel free to go super short, you’re the queen of the pixie cut
- Soft waves looks good on you
- Celebrities with heart shape faces include Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon
ROUND
Your face is considered beautifully feminine and roughly have the same length and width measurement. It widens at the cheekbones and narrows towards the forehead and chin.
Most flattering haircuts
- Longer lengths are best
- Layered cuts, where layers are cut to angle your cheekbones. Your shortest layer should be at your chin
- Long side swept bangs
- Gentle waves
- A-line bob (shorter at the back, longer in the front), not shorter than the chin
- Side path works well
- If you want to go short, go pixie with alot of layers.
- Celebrities with round faces include Emma Stone and Mila Kunis
OVAL
You can pull off almost any hair cut. The style you go for will depend on which features you would like to enhance.
Most flattering haircuts
- Layers (any length) angled towards the feature you want to enhance e.g. cheekbones, lips etc.
- Long beachy waves
- You can also go very short, like a pixie haircut
- Celebrities with oval faces include Jennifer Aniston and Charlize Theron
SQUARE
Your features are strikingly bold. Often the easiest face shape to identify, you have a strong jawline and the width of your face from your forehead to your chin will be more or less the same.
Most flattering haircuts
- Length is better
- Long bobs below the chin work too. A-line bob is the most flattering, avoid one-length bobs
- Soft layered looks suit you best
- Side swept bangs
- Soft waves
- Celebrities with square faces include Angelina Jolie and Keira Knightley
Avoid cuts that are angled and have strong full bangs e.g. blunt cuts as it eventuates your strong jaw line. Softer styles soften your sharp features.
