Dare to dream – Ma Ashuma Clothing Launch 2016

I’m anxious and excited about the launch of my brand, Ma Ashuma and producing my first collection! Aaaah! My first collection! Can’t believe it! Everything’s coming together!

If you haven’t got a chance to read our About page yet, my label is named after my mom, who sadly passed away from cancer when I was 13 years old. Yes, it’s her in the picture, she was in her 20’s when the photo was taken! She is an inspiration to me and I’m hoping to incorporate the love I have for her into my designs.

I decided to go after my dream of designing clothes in the first year I moved to Johannesburg in 2014.

After I arrived in Johannesburg in May 2014, fresh in love from honeymooning in Thailand, I started settling into my new life. When I say new, I mean new city, new apartment, new job and of course a new husband!

But there was something about all the change in 2014. It suddenly gave me the bravery to chase my dreams. I started off slowly with a blog in June 2014, writing about everyday style tips.

In September 2014 I began sewing classes at Truly Truly Sewing. After having done classes in Cape Town it was something familiar to help me settle in.

On the evening of 31 December 2014 I declared on Social Media that I would be launching a blouse line!

I’ve taken my time to slowly get to grips with my new adventure! For sixteen months since my declaration on 31 December 2014, I have been sewing the seeds, excuse the pun haha,to a stable foundation for my brand and business.

I’ve up skilled myself where I lacked knowledge with digital marketing and startup designer courses and talented people to help me make my launch happen this year!

My emotions are sky high as I spend the next few months focusing on introducing my brand, Ma Ashuma to the world and producing my first collection! *Eeeeek!*

Although the clothing launch date has not yet been finalized, it is scheduled to happen in the second half of 2016. It’s my first time managing a production line and I want to make sure I can stick to the launch date!

I have so much fun stuff to do too, like a photo shoot of our line and setting up my first Online Store, which by the way, will be my primary sales platform!

My first collection will be a collection of shirt dresses made to fit anyone’s wardrobe. My designs are simple and elegant yet modern with classic design details.

It will be available in stretch cotton for comfort and two basic colours black and white. I’ll also have a few lovely printed pieces and a couple in bold colours.

Here’s a sneak peek of the collection, just to give you an idea of what it’s all about! In the photo below, I’m wearing one of my designs, Aubrey! I wore it when I was invited to a jewelry launch at Xplosion Jewellers.

Dearest Zeenat, I hope this note finds you well. Reading your latest newsletter and the awesome news about your Ma Ashuma launch brought tears of joy and so much pride in you!

Congratulations on living your dream. You were always clear on your vision. I often tell young students about the day when you and Terri dressed into the graduation gown in my office and visualized your own graduation. Your inner fire – that inspirational passion – shines through in every picture and word you share. Your sheer determination and hard work serve you so well. Thank you for being such an inspiration to us all.

I remember fondly our chats at varsity and feel like a proud mommy every time I get your newsletter. I wish you strength and courage as you continue to live your passion and purpose.

    All my love and respect
